Borderlands La Frontera The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldua
This reading talked a lot about the borders between Mexico and the United States. Obviously, the United States was colonized by the Anglo People, but, in the reading, the author says that the land was once Mexican and Indian and that it will be again. I think that it is true because now there is a vast population of Mexican people in the United States. However, I cannot say the same about the Indigenous Indians who once lived in the United States. "The Mexican children kick their soccer balls across and run after it, entering the United States." This quote holds many meanings. The cultural aspect of it would be the sport of soccer. Showing how Mexico has brought that culture to the United States. "The Tortilla Curtain" which divides a pueblo, a culture. The border has created a type of subculture because of the division of two cultures and people, a border culture. Borders are meant to define what is safe and unsafe, to distinguish us from them. Borderland is an unnatural boundary created by emotional residue. Borders become that symbol of oppression. "Gringos" consider the inhabitants' transgressors or aliens. Trespassers of the line will always have consequences that are crude and unjust. However, "legitimate" inhabitants are those in power, Whites, or those who wish to aline themselves with Whites.
Despite the border made between Mexico and the US, Mexico has a rich history along with the rest of the world. Throughout history, Mexico has been viewed as the "bad guy" in the eyes of the United States. They played the main antagonist during the battle of the Alamo. The end result of this altercation between the US and Mexico was Mexico losing its land and having the border built between them. The "gringo" seized power and locked into the falsehood of white superiority. Many families and people lost their homes and their land from the result of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo
For the author and her family, her father had to become a sharecropper to survive. However, her father had to repay the loan and fork over 40% of his earnings. This is clearly an unjust situation and is controlled by the white supremacy that took the lands and rights from these people in the first place.
With the unjust treatment of these people and the loss of lands from Mexico through conquest, the treaty that created this situation should be revisited and revised. Though much has changed from that time, there are still ways for mutual satisfaction to be made through compromise. The only thing that is stopping that from happening is the White People in power who are too proud or too arrogant to relinquish their position or show any signs of equal treatment. Changes need to be made in the US government, but I believe there will be a time where things can go right for once.
